Third times the charm

Third times the charm!! Our third island top went in! Yes I said third 🤦🏼‍♀️ The first one was cracked when it was installed. It was a bit defeating because the first one was so beautiful.

The supplier was able to get us a second slab of the stone. However, while they were cutting the slab at their facility, it cracked too! This isn’t a soft stone so it’s crazy we had two cracking issues. I was beginning to think this slab just wasn’t meant to be. I went out of my comfort zone when I picked it so I felt like the universe was telling me I should have kept it simple.

The stone company was able to get us a third slab of the same stone. We got lucky because this third slab is the most beautiful of them all!! It has so much veining to it compared to the others. It was installed with no issues this time! It’s such a relief because I had my heart set on this stone. The last thing I wanted to do was make another design choice this far in the building process!

Close to closing

We are just 2 1/2 weeks from our closing date! We have waited 15 months for this day. It’s sort of strange to think it’s almost here. It actually doesn’t feel real yet. It’s going to be an incredibly surreal feeling to actually be handed the keys!

These video updates we have done are not only for my husband and I, but something fun for us to show the boys one day. We want to be able to show them how the house was built and the progression of it. I hope it’ll help them appreciate the house that much more. 💙

Master bath update

Master bath update! We had our tile floor continue from the master bath through to the closet. Originally we had planned to put carpet in the closet. But carpet gets dirty quick. And since we already had tile in the bathroom, it made sense to just continue the tile through to the closet for a smooth clean look. ✨

We also removed the closet door! We never used the closet door at our other houses. We left it open all the time. I honestly can’t ever remember a time when it was shut. I had my husband remove the door at one of our previous houses because it got in the way of my ability to get to clothes. So for this house we did away with the closet door! We also opened the doorway up a bit more to give the closet opening a more grand look. I love the way it turned out! 🚪

Kitchen Design

The one room that we spend a good majority of our time in our house is the kitchen! I wanted a kitchen with a clean modern look. But I also wanted it to have a little attitude without being too dramatic.

We picked a white tile with a little grey to it and had it set in a double herringbone pattern. I absolutely love how it turned out! I think the double herringbone helps make the thin tile look a little less busy than it would if we had done a single herringbone pattern.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to like a shiny tile. Originally in my head I had a matte tile planned. But we found this tile and fell in love with it. Now that it’s installed I love how the light hits it and just makes it shine. I think if I’d gone with a matte it wouldn’t have made the tile pop as much. And it definitely wouldn’t catch the light like this tile does so it would have a darker look to it.

The kitchen is coming together nicely! I just can’t wait for the day I get to see it all completed!

Powder Bath Design

Currently one of my favorite rooms in the house…..a bathroom! 😂 We kept most of our bathroom designs very clean and simple. But in the downstairs powder bath I decided to go a little daring.

I saw this beautiful blue tile at the design center. It literally caught my eye the minute we walked in. I knew I had to have it somewhere in the house!

After I first chose the tile I went back and forth on it. I was afraid it was too dramatic. But I also loved it so much. After a bit of debate I decided to just leave it and pray for the best. I am SO glad I did! It turned out beautiful! I think it would have been a little too much for a large room, but it looks great in a small powder bath. I love it even more after the design assistant told us the tile is being retired and won’t be available after we get it. That means no one else can have this tile in their house!

This was one of those moments I’m glad I only second guessed my decision and didn’t actually change it! I’m already searching out wall decor and little accent items to put in there to bring out the blue of the tile! 💙

Scripture in the house

We wrote a few scripture verses in different parts of our house. The entry, living room, kitchen, stairs, playroom, master, etc. They each relate to those specific parts of the house and our lives.

My handwriting sadly looks absolutely terrible as I was writing. You don’t realize how hard it is to write on unfinished floors till you get started! There was so much material and stuff stuck to it, even after I tried cleaning it, that made it hard to write on. I’m surprised you can even read half of what I wrote in some places!

We even let our 3 year old color on the floor a little so he could leave his mark in his room. He doesn’t quite understand it now but he enjoyed it.

When the house is done, you won’t see the scripture. The hardwood floors will cover it, but we’ll know it’s there. It’s sort of like God himself. You can’t see him, but you know he’s always there. It’s a great memory for us to have that writing there but secretly hidden. 🙏🏻

Raising the ceiling

I’m loving the new ceiling height in the kitchen. The original height was 15ft. Now we are at 23ft! It really makes the room feel so much more grand. Not to mention it gives it more of an airy feel.

Don’t get me wrong, a 15ft ceiling would have been beautiful. I wouldn’t have had any complaints. But when we put in the balcony, we had to raise the ceiling and now it’s 23ft. So I went from loving the ceiling height to LOVING the ceiling height!

Sometimes I wonder if my husbands main goal for putting in the balcony was because he knew it would raise the ceiling height. He’s 6’6 so everything feels short or small to him. Old houses can be brutal for him to walk in to. Especially ones with archways because he has to walk directly under the middle of the arch or he risks hitting his head. I don’t have these problems being 5’3. 😂

Either way, putting a balcony in the playroom overlooking the kitchen was one of our best ideas!

Laundry addition

One of the best ideas my husband has had for our house……expanding the upstairs play room closet and making it in to an upstairs laundry closet!

Call me lazy but the last thing I want to do is haul the kids laundry up and down the stairs multiple times a week. First world problems, I know! 😂

I never even thought about having an upstairs laundry. But after talking with our builder my husband found a way to fit it! Did we lose storage space for the game room? NOPE! How? Well we expanded the closet so it’s double what it was supposed to be. So not only will it fit a stacked washer and dryer but we will have shelving on the side for whatever. We also made adjustments to a small linen closet just outside Camden’s room. So that will be perfect to put board games and toys!

I have an upstairs laundry! I can’t say it enough times! Lol That’s how excited I am about it. 💃🏼

Little details when building

It’s crazy to me the amount of detail that goes in to building a house. I just thought builders followed a plan and that was that. Everything would be prefect and as it was supposed to be. I’m a little naive sometimes, I know!

As we have been going through the build process I realize there is so much work and detail that you as the homeowner have to pay attention to. Things aren’t always done how they are “supposed to be.” For example, some of our outlets in one room are all at different heights. They don’t run along the floor at an even height as you’d expect. If we hadn’t caught that and put it on our list of fixes for the builder, that room would have been finished with outlets scattered all over and it would have looked ridiculous in the end.

In another room the overhead fan location wasn’t in the center of the room. It was off center by a foot. Another minor thing that would have looked terrible later on had we not caught it early.

One of the biggest fixes we had recently was the niche in the master shower. The builders put the niche at too high of a height originally. I’m 5’3, and in order to reach for shampoo, I literally would have had to reach up over my head almost a foot to get a shower bottle. If you’re over 6ft this niche would have been fine. But for a shorter person like me, the niche was terribly located. So we had it bumped down a bit. Now it’s at a height that anyone, besides a child, can comfortably reach.

These are all things I would have never thought to even pay attention to. But when you’re building, literally every little detail of the house needs to be checked. Now I understand why people say building a house is so stressful!

Home building struggles

Our builder is having to put a camera near our house to keep an eye on our build and the others on the street.

During one visit we noticed a lot of bricks thrown all over the place and lots of broken beer bottles all over the site. My husband mentioned this to the builder and he said there were a couple thousand dollars of building material that had been damaged and stolen as well.

We came back a week later to find someone had gone muddling through our front yard and back yard. They tore up the lot next to us spinning out, then drove through the front of another house being built a few down from us. There wasn’t any major damage done thank goodness. They just tossed up a lot of dirt and mud. However they did get super close to the house. Had the mud shifted under them at a different angle and they could have hit our house.

It’s super frustrating but not surprising that people have messed with the job site. I’ve heard horror stories about things happening to people’s builds due to others damaging the property. At least the damage done to ours is just tossed bricks and glass. Better than someone going through and doing structural damage! I feel bad the builder had materials stollen. I just hope karma does her job and gets those thieves back.

Hopefully with cameras up, it will deter anyone from doing anything else they shouldn’t!
